Dr. Thomas Michaels
Finding the right mental health provider can feel overwhelming. Whether you are seeking support for anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, addiction and recovery, daily stress, or challenges within your relationship, you don’t have to navigate it alone. I provide both individual and couples therapy through secure telehealth, offering flexibility, privacy, and ease in scheduling.
I am licensed in Massachusetts, Texas, and North Carolina and bring over 15 years of experience working with individuals, couples, and families. My clinical training took place in New York City and Boston, and I spent many years practicing in the Boston area before relocating to Texas. I have since returned to New England, where I continue to feel deeply connected to this work. I am particularly passionate about supporting individuals in early recovery, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and those navigating loss or major life transitions.
My professional background includes community mental health, emergency room settings, and private practice. Across these settings, I have worked with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, trauma, grief and loss, and relationship distress. I am both a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) and a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) in the state of Massachusetts.
I work from the belief that individual well-being and relationship health are deeply connected. In therapy, we will look at how stress, mood, life changes, addiction, and past experiences show up both internally and within your closest relationships. Whether we are meeting individually or together as a couple, the work is collaborative, practical, and grounded in helping you create lasting change rather than short-term relief.
For relationship work, I am a Certified Leader of The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work and a Level 3–trained clinician with The Gottman Institute. I work with couples across many relationship structures, including married partners, long-term committed couples, and those in polyamorous or open relationships. Couples may choose ongoing weekly therapy or participate in a structured 10-week program that provides concrete, research-based tools for improving communication, trust, and connection. All couples work begins with a comprehensive assessment phase, including an online Gottman Institute assessment, a joint history-taking session, and a feedback and treatment-planning meeting.
For individuals, therapy often focuses on understanding emotional patterns, coping strategies, and relationship dynamics that may no longer be serving you. Together, we identify what you have already tried, clarify what is not working, and develop new approaches that support a more meaningful, balanced, and connected life—both within yourself and with others.
As a person in long-term recovery and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, combined with specialized clinical training in both areas, I bring an added level of understanding and attunement to the work. I strive to offer a therapeutic space that is affirming, respectful, and grounded in real-world experience.
I am currently in-network with several commercial insurance plans and am in the process of onboarding with additional carriers. If your insurance is not listed, please feel free to ask about anticipated acceptance. If I am unable to work with your plan, I am happy to help connect you with another provider. My goal is to ensure you receive the care and support you need.
I look forward to connecting and beginning our work together.
